
The aims of the course are to deliver a wide range of skills that are interconnected with other disciplines. Written and verbal communication will develop as well as an awareness of sources and the ability to acknowledge the origins of institutions and events around us today. Students will also develop their ability to handle texts, data and different interpretations. Key historical skills covered range from description, explanation, evaluating significance, classification, to assessing cause and consequence.
A minimum of grade 6 at GCSE History is required and grade 6 in English language is recommended due to the essay based assessment and coursework.
Component 1 - Breadth Study: Tsarist and Communist Russia 1855-1964 - 2 hours 30 minutes written exam; three questions (one compulsory); 80 marks - 40% of A Level. Component 2 - Depth Study: The Making of Modern Britain 1951-2007 - 2 hours 30 minutes written exam; three questions (one compulsory); 80 marks - 40% of A Level. Component 3 - NEA (coursework element) - A personal study based on a topic of student’s choice 3000-4000 words; 40 marks - 20% of A Level; marked by teachers; moderated by AQA
