Course summary
This aims to introduce students to a broad range of English Literature from across the centuries, including Shakespeare, Milton, WW1 poetry, the American novel and contemporary playwrights and novelists. Students will study a number of set texts and will have the opportunity to pursue their own individual exploration of texts from these three genres (drama, poetry and prose) in the coursework unit. Since the art of communication is such an essential and respected skill in today’s society, studying the works of those who have mastered it inevitably increases students’ skills in this crucial area. Through the analysis of texts, students will learn to express ideas lucidly in discussion while becoming confident at communicating their ideas fluently in writing. These very valuable and transferable skills will equip students to pursue a wide variety of different career paths. Studying English Literature may involve theatre or cinema visits, workshops at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and selected university seminars/lectures.
