Course summary

Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour, which explores how we make sense of the world, ourselves and others. It is about the wonder of being alive! This course encourages students to ask questions of what they see, in order to make sense of the world they live in. On this course, you will study and debate areas such as: Social Influence – Why do people participate in atrocities like the Holocaust? Is it down to individual personalities or the situation they are in? Psychopathology – What is abnormal? When does eccentricity become a mental health issue? Biopsychology – How does our brain recover from trauma? What governs our bodily rhythms? Forensic Psychology – Are criminals born or made? Psychology helps you to learn how to learn, develop critical thinking faculties, and supports you to see the world from other perspectives. Through the strong backbone of research methods, you will have the opportunity to develop skills in research, analysis, problem solving, reasoning, ethical considerations, and more. These are competencies that make psychology students very desirable for many University courses, apprenticeships and employers. Career Pathways – Psychologist: examples include Clinical Psychologist and Forensic Psychologist – Mental Health Services – Psychological Therapies – Occupational Therapist – Rehabilitation Services – Education: Teaching and Learning Support – Police and Social Work
