Course summary

You will need to be motivated, enthusiastic and work independently for long periods on project work. Successful students will enjoy problem-solving and be resilient when faced with problems that are not solved immediately. It is preferable to have an interest in computer hardware and coding to enjoy and achieve in this subject. It is preferable to have studied Computer Science at GCSE and achieved a Grade 6. Exceptions could be made for students who are experienced programmers and could demonstrate ability in the Python programming language. In addition, you should have an active interest in computing to complement your studies. Computer Science is a subject with links to Mathematics and Physics. Whilst there is little overlap with these courses, some of the same skills will be required to be successful in them. Computer Science is a linear course -examinations are taken at the end of the two years. There are two examinations, one of which is taken project. The course content includes fundamentals of: programming, data structures, algorithms and data representation. Other topics include computer hardware, big data, networks and the moral, social, legal and cultural issues raised by the proliferation of computing technology. Computer Science A Level would support applications for a range of higher education or employment opportunities in a range of software engineering. However, if you do not wish to pursue this path, the critical thinking and problem-solving skills you will develop are useful for a range of education and career paths. 11
