Course summary

The A Level course aims to further an interest and enthusiasm for language learning. Students will develop an understanding of French in a variety of contexts and will be able to communicate confidently and clearly for a range of purposes. Furthermore, the course aims to deepen awareness and understanding of the society and culture of France and the French-speaking world. Students will also acquire knowledge, skills and understanding for practical use and for further study and employment. Over the 2 years, students will study the French language and culture. The topics covered are: social issues and trends and artistic and political culture. Through these topics students will discuss topics such as: the changing nature of family, 'cyber-society', the place of voluntary work, positive features of a diverse society, life for the marginalised, how criminals are treated, a culture proud of its heritage, contemporary francophone music, cinema: the 7th art form, teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment, demonstrations, strikes – who holds the power? and politics and immigration. Students will also cover a wide range of grammar and will study one text and one film or two texts from the list set in the specification.
