Course summary

This exciting new qualification is being offered in response to an increasing interest in progression into medical sciences in place of traditional academic routes into medicine. It will appeal to you if you have an interest in working in a medical or healthcare related field such as sports therapy, physiotherapy, biomedical sciences or psychology; or if you would like to study a Science subject at a higher level but don’t want to pick a single Science A Level and feel that a course with some internal assessment will allow you to achieve a better outcome. During the Medical Science (AAQ) you will study the principles and applications of medical science through three mandatory units, and further explore other areas in more detail via an optional unit. The mandatory units develop: • knowledge and understanding of human physiology, anatomy and pathology, • practical skills in microbiology and their application in the diagnosis of disease • understanding of health issues and scientific reporting • secondary research skills including collection and interpretation of data from valid sources and drawing reasoned conclusions The course encompasses practicals that allow you to learn in the context of realistic workplace situations, as well as gaining relevant scientific knowledge and laboratory analytical skills beneficial for employability within the medical and science sectors. The qualification combines with almost all AS or A level subjects, with specific links to learning in subjects such as physical education and sport, sociology, chemistry and psychology.
