Course summary
This course will teach students how to analyse everyday written and spoken language in detail, using the linguistic methods: Lexis & Semantics, Discourse Structure, Grammar & Syntax, Graphology, Phonology and Pragmatics. Students will learn about the ways in which language varies across regions, occupations and other social groups. They will also develop their own skills as writers, producing non-fiction articles. In the first term of the course, students will start with an introduction to the linguistic methods and learn much of the metalanguage of the subject. They will also learn about how the English language has changed over time.
