Course summary

OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Sport Studies) If you’re passionate about sport, fitness, and physical activity, this course offers the chance to study the subject in depth while keeping space in your timetable for another qualification. The OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Sport Studies) is equivalent to two A Levels, combining classroom learning with practical experience linked to the sports industry. You’ll study a range of topics including anatomy and physiology, sports psychology, coaching and leadership, fitness testing, nutrition, and how sport is organised and developed in the UK. The course helps you develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills, along with a deeper understanding of how the body and mind work in sport. At UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, you’ll benefit from our strong partnerships with the sports industry, including links with Sheffield Hallam University, the English Institute of Sport, and professional clubs. These connections give you opportunities to work alongside experts, take part in live projects, and explore different career pathways. The Diploma can be taken alongside one A Level or another vocational subject, allowing you to tailor your study programme to your future goals. Students studying the Certificate, Diploma, and Extended Diploma are taught together, with delivery carefully planned so that everyone completes only the units needed for their chosen qualification over the two years. This qualification can lead to university courses such as sport and exercise science, sports coaching, physiotherapy, or physical education, and can also support entry into careers like personal training, coaching, fitness instruction, or sports development.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment Assessment is a mix of coursework and external exams. Most units are internally assessed through assignments such as written reports, practical activities, and presentations based on real sports situations. These are then externally moderated by the exam board (OCR) to make sure standards are consistent across all centres. A few key units are externally assessed through exams or set tasks. This mix of assessment methods allows you to show both your practical skills and theoretical understanding throughout the course.
