Course summary

Psychology is the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour, and the application of such knowledge to real life. In Year 1 students study two units; Unit 1 includes cognitive psychology (memory), developmental psychology (attachment), and social psychology (studying how people obey and conform). Unit 2 includes approaches in psychology (including biopsychology), psychopathology (where we will look at causes and treatments for psychological disorders) and research methods used by psychologists. In year 2 there are additional topics such as cognition and development, aggression and students also study psychological disorders such as schizophrenia. They will also study Biopsychology. Throughout the course students study major themes and viewpoints that are the focus of practicing psychologists. Psychology is a fascinating subject that is continually evolving. Students are expected to take an active part in all lessons, which includes undertaking some psychological experiments and discussions.
