Course summary
A-Level History offers an in-depth exploration of major political, social and ideological transformations that shaped the modern world. Students will study Russia, 1917–91: from Lenin to Yeltsin, Mao’s China, 1949–76, The British Experience of Warfare, c1790–1918, and Coursework on the Cold War. These topics allow students to engage with themes of power and ideology, warfare and society, and global conflict, developing a nuanced understanding of continuity and change across different periods and regions. You would be suitable for this course if you have a genuine interest in understanding how past events shape the present, an inquisitive mind and enjoy asking challenging questions, A willingness to read widely, think critically and debate ideas and the ability to work independently and manage extended reading and writing tasks. Key Skills You Will Develop include critical analysis of historical sources and interpretations, structured argumentation in essays and discussions, independent research and evaluation of evidence Communication skills, both written and oral and organisation and time management, essential for handling complex material.
