Course summary

The AS/A Level Music course will provide you with the opportunity to broaden your musical experiences and interests, develop your imagination, foster creativity and communicate effectively as a musician. The course is divided into three components (majoring in either performance or composition by Year 13): Component 1 Performance: You will explore musical styles, the musical elements, interpretations and expression. You will perform as a soloist and/or as part of an ensemble on your chosen instrument(s) and/or voice as part of a short recital. You will be further supported by the school with free, individual music tuition for 30 minutes a week. Component 2 Composition: You will demonstrate the manipulation of musical ideas, and the use of musical devices and conventions, to compose to a brief plus one or two free choice compositions. The Department is very well equipped with music technology software (iMacs | Sibelius | Logic Pro X) to support you in the creation and presentation of music. Component 3 Listening and Appraising: You will develop your aural awareness, musical vocabulary and academic study of music history, harmony and theory, appraising contrasting genres, styles and traditions of music. This will include the western classical tradition with a focus on the development of the symphony, music at the turn of and into the 20th century, and either the development of rock and pop or musical theatre.
