Course summary

With an incredible series of unexpected and unpredictable events at home and abroad in recent years, the study of Politics has never been more relevant or more fascinating and it’s a great subject for those with enquiring minds and a desire to find out what is going on in the world today and why. The specification for the Edexcel exam board is outlined below. Modules Paper 1: UK Politics covers the following topics: democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems and voting behaviour and the media. There is also the core political ideas of liberalism, conservatism, and socialism. Paper 2: UK Government covers: the constitution, Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Executive and relations between the institutions. There is also study the non-core political theory of nationalism. Paper 3: Global Politics covers: the state and globalisation, global governance: political, economic, environmental, and human rights, the EU and regionalism and comparative theories (realism and liberalism).

Entry requirements

Minimum grade 5 in GCSE English Language and, if studied, a grade 5 in GCSE History/Citizenship. For all subjects a GCSE in the chosen area is an advantage and provides good foundational knowledge and skills. More importantly, you must enjoy the subject; you should be motivated to do well, want to work hard and have a keen interest in studying around the subject, independently. Our entry requirements provide insight into the required academic level to be successful at this course. How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: Two-hour paper, three essays (one source essay question, one essay and one ideologies essay) worth 33.3% of total A Level grade. Paper 2: Two-hour paper, three essays (one source essay question, one essay and one ideologies essay) worth 33.3% of total A level grade. Paper 3: Two-hour paper, four essays (two short 12-mark questions and two 30-mark essays) worth 33.3% of total A level grade.
