Course summary

A Level Mathematics is designed to enable students to: • Further develop previously studied mathematical skills to solve more complex problems. • Use mathematics to communicate through logic and reasoning. • Recognise how situations can be represented mathematically and understand relations between ‘real world’ problems in modern-day Britain and mathematical models. Due to the nature of the subject, students are expected to work at a fast pace and effectively manage their time. The studying of mathematics at advanced levels requires the ability to work independently on private study outside of lessons. Students who take this course are highly motivated and enjoy the study of mathematics. Students will have the opportunity to learn new theorems, delve into the world of calculus, learn new techniques for problem solving, but most importantly, develop a true love for Mathematics. Course Content A Level Mathematics builds upon the knowledge gained through Higher Tier GCSE learning. • Core Skills: calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, proof, numerical methods, polynomials. • Statistics: hypothesis testing, probability, normal and binomial distributions. • Mechanics: kinematics in one and two dimensions, Newton’s law and forces.

Entry requirements

Minimum grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics. For all subjects a GCSE in the chosen area is an advantage and provides good foundational knowledge and skills. More importantly, you must enjoy the subject; you should be motivated to do well, want to work hard and have a keen interest in studying around the subject, independently. Our entry requirements provide insight into the required academic level to be successful at this course. However, please speak to us if you are interested in studying this subject and have concerns that you do not have a GCSE in this area or have concerns that you may not achieve the entry level required. Our team can be contacted on wrensix@wren.excalibur.org.uk.

How you'll be assessed

A Level Mathematics is a two-year course which is examined entirely at the end of Year 13 in three equally weighted 2 hour written examinations.
