Course summary

The course builds on concepts and skills that will have been developed in the GCSE Science courses. It encourages students to: 1. further their knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm for Biology; 2. develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods; 3. develop competence in practical, mathematical and problem solving skills; 4. gain an appreciation of the effects of biology on society. Practical assessment does not count towards the A level. However, during the course students will be assessed and at A level this will result in a separate endorsement of their practical skills. Assessment of practical skills will also be tested via the written papers. Many of the students studying biology have gone to a variety of courses including: Medicine Pharmacy Veterinary Science Biomedical & Biological Science Genetics Agriculture Environmental Science Teaching Biologists will have the chance to enter the Intermediate Biology Olympiad in year 12 and The British Biology Olympiad in Y13 which possibly gives them the opportunity to represent their country internationally. Students will also have the opportunity to attend Biology live. In year 12 students will study: Unit 1 Biological molecules Unit 2 Cells Unit 3 Exchange in organisms Unit 4 Genes and variation In year 13 students will study: Unit 5 Energy transfers Unit 6 Responding to change Unit 7 Genetics, evolution and ecosystems Unit 8 The control of gene expression
