Course summary

Mathematics at A-Level is a course worth studying not only as a supporting subject for the physical and social sciences, but in its own right. It is challenging, interesting and directly develops transferable skills that are so often required in higher education and in many fields of work. This has led to it being considered a ‘facilitating subject’ by universities, allowing for a wider availability of degree course choice, when proceeding on to higher education. It builds on work students will have met at GCSE, but also involves new ideas that some of the greatest minds of the millennium have produced. Students will be encouraged to use mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems. They will also have to understand and demonstrate what is meant by proof in mathematics. It will also involve simplifying real-life situations so that students can use mathematics to show what is happening and what might happen in different circumstances. Mathematics will also be used to solve problems that are applicable to real life contexts. The course covers elements of statistics, mechanics and a wide variety of pure mathematics. Students will learn to use calculator technology and other resources, such as formulae booklets and statistical tables, effectively and appropriately.

Entry requirements

Students will need to have at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English Language and Mathematics at Level 4. To enable students to select the most appropriate subjects at A-Level we use a system based on their APS (average point score) from their GCSE results. Add together your 8 highest GCSE's and then divide by 8 to give your APS. We advise students to choose the subjects which best fit their APS.
