Course summary

Biology is the study of living things and helps us to make sense of the world around us. It enables us to answer questions like “Why are plants green?” and “How does my heart beat constantly?” as well as “How closely related are human beings to dinosaurs?” Biology has strong links with Chemistry and Geology and can open up many pathways into careers in health and clinical professions, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, optometry or nursing.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades 4-9 including English Language grade 5, Maths grade 6, plus GCSE Biology grade 6 or Science Trilogy 6,6.

How you'll be assessed

Year 1 Topics • Biological molecules • Cells • Organisms exchange substances with their environment • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms Year 2 Topics • Energy transfers in and between organisms • Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems • The control of gene expression Students complete field work at the end of Year 12. The course runs for 2 years with three exams at the end of the second year. The first two exams carry a weighting of 35% each and the final exam carries a weighting of 30%. All exams are 2 hours long. There will also be on-going teacher assessment of practical skills. in order for students to pass the practical endorsement.
