Course summary

The course is designed to give learners a range of specialist knowledge and transferable skills in the context of applied IT, providing them with the opportunity to enter an apprenticeship, move directly into employment, or progress to a related Higher Education (HE) course. The course will provide learners with the opportunity through applied learning to develop the core specialist knowledge, skills and understanding required in the IT sector. Learners will develop a fundamental knowledge required for a career working in data-related occupations. They will learn about the challenges of managing big data and the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in data science. They will embrace the principles of data modelling with spreadsheets and the knowledge and skills required to plan, design, create and test a spreadsheet model solution that meets the needs of a specific client. Both the subject-specific knowledge, understanding and skills, and broader transferable skills developed through these units, will help you progress to further study in related areas such as Business Analytics, Information Technology and Digital Marketing to name a few.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades 4-9 including English Language and Maths, Plus GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in Computer Science or IT.

How you'll be assessed

Students will complete five units. Two units are externally assessed and three are Non-Examined Assessments (NEA) units. There are three mandatory units which are as follows: • Fundamentals of data analytics • Big Data and Machine Learning • Spreadsheet and data modelling There are two additional units that have been selected: • Data and the Internet of Everything (IoE) • Data and Digital Marketing
