Course summary

This dynamic course has been developed to allow students to actively experience a comprehensive range of three-dimensional art and design processes and contexts. If you like drawing, sketching and computer design this is for you. Get ready to manufacture your inventions in wood, plastic, metal and other materials. Studying Three-Dimensional Design builds and stretches your practical and theoretical skillset and allows you to work in very different ways compared to traditional subjects. The skills you develop are transferable and the independence and resilience you build will enhance all areas of your learning, all of which is highly sought after by future employers. It is worth noting that the creative industries are the fastest growing economic sector in the UK. Three-Dimensional Design offers a wide array of career potential. If you are contemplating a career in architecture, product design or graphics, this course is an excellent basis for Further/higher education courses, leading to a wide variety of careers in the Design sector. You will also earn UCAS points that contribute to university admission requirements. During the course you will build up a range of graphic illustration skills to be able to create your own designs as 3D models. These will range from pencil and rendered sketches through to using sophisticated software packages such as SketchUp, Photoshop, 2D Design and Fusion 360. You will be trained to use tools and machinery from simple hand tools to the use of the laser cutter and 3D printer. During the course you will have the freedom to choose your major design project which could be architectural or another product.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades 4-9 including both English Language and Maths plus a grade 5+ in DT and/or Art.

How you'll be assessed

Component 1 - (Personal Investigation) – Coursework. Weighting: 60% Duration: 1 Year (Year 13). Component 2 - (External Unit) – Externally Set Assignment. Weighting: 40% Duration: 15-hour exam. Component 1 comprises internally set workshops and assignments. Component 2 is an externally set project, culminating in a 15-hour examination. Both components are Internally assessed by your teachers and moderated by the exam board.
