Candidates choosing A’ level Textiles have the opportunity to follow an exciting 2-year course that integrates practical, critical and theoretical study. You will be given the chance to work with a wide variety of media and processes, and thus experience textiles in the broadest sense from 2D to 3D. At each stage, the course is designed to build on and extend skills, enabling learners to become more confident and independent in their practice. Students will enjoy opportunities to build on knowledge, skills and understanding of textiles media and processes gained through gallery and museum visits, workshops, fashion illustration opportunities and have access to exhibit work in both local and national exhibitions. In your second year, you will focus on a personal investigation which will lead from fashion designs to a collection of garments. These will be exhibited at our annual fashion show. Support is also provided with creative portfolio preparation for higher education interviews. This course supports students who wish to continue onto any creative-based fashion and design courses in higher education, apprenticeships or employment.
5 GCSE grades 4-9 including both English Language and Maths, plus GCSE grade 5 (or equivalent) in an art-related course.
Throughout the 2-year course the emphasis is on learning about new materials and exploring techniques. In Year 12, you will undertake a series of investigations in the form of two projects (fashion construction and a personal theme project). Themes are open ended to allow students to develop their own creative pathways. In the second year, students are expected to work much more independently and work may well be based on experiences and interests developed in the first year of the course. You will be required to produce an extended unit of study, accompanied by a written essay to support their practical investigations. Coursework is worth 60% of the overall grade and the examination is worth 40%. Throughout the course students will be continually assessed through various forms. At the end of Year 13 students will sit a 15-hour practical examination.
