Students study a minimum of 8 texts over 2 years. Analysis explores the key areas of tragedy and political writing and there is also an opportunity to develop understanding of critical theory. This course will enable students to develop analytical skills and powers of expression through the close study of thought-provoking and inspirational texts. Students will read classic examples of poetry, prose and drama, such as Othello by William Shakespeare, Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and poetry by William Blake.
At least a grade 5, preferably a 6, in GCSE English is required in order to be accepted on to the course. However, we will also consider students' suitability for the course on an individual basis. Equally important will be an interest in fiction, in words and ideas, and students will be encouraged to read as widely as possible to make their own discoveries about literature.
Assessment is by examinations and a coursework investigation.
