A Level Music enables students to extend their knowledge and understanding of music, to create and develop their own musical ideas and to demonstrate technical, interpretative and communication skills through performing. Course structure: Component 1: Performing (35%) externally assessed. A performance of one or more pieces, performed as a recital. This can be a solo or ensemble performance. Component 2: Composing (25%) externally assessed. Two compositions: one to a set brief and one free composition. Component 3: Appraising (40%) exam. Application of knowledge through the context of three areas of study: 1) Western Classical Tradition, 2) Option from Rock and Pop, Musical Theatre and Jazz, and 3) Music in the 20th Century. Complementary Courses: Art, Drama, English Literature and Humanities. Leads to: Any degree, but specifically Music. Skills developed are transferable to any HE or apprenticeship route. Music is recognised as a highly academic A Level.
