Course summary
Exam board – AQA, Specification 7408D Minimum requirements for the course: Grade 6, 6 in Combined Science. If studying separate sciences then students must have Grade 6 in at least two sciences including Physics. Students must also have Grade 6 in Mathematics. We expect all students to study A level Physics alongside another science, Maths or Computer Science A level. Students considering alternative combinations of subjects must discuss this with Dr Casson prior to the application deadline. Staff contact: Dr Casson, cca@cheneyschool.org What is Physics all about? Physics is the study of the world around us and the fundamental laws that govern it, from the sub-atomic world of quantum physics to the furthest reaches of the Universe. You will study the theory in context: calculations involving real-life situations, modelling of abstract concepts and discussion of some of the biggest questions in science. Course structure: Units include Measurements and their Errors, Particles and Quantum Physics, Waves, Mechanics and Materials, Electricity, Harmonic Motion, Gas and Thermal Physics, Field Theory, Nuclear Physics, Turning Points in Physics. 3 x 2-hour exams at the end of Year 13, plus a minimum of 12 required practicals. Successful completion will gain students a practical endorsement. Complementary courses: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Computing. Leads to: Degrees in Physics and Philosophy, Astrophysics, Medicine, Aeronautics, Engineering, Mathematics, Particle Physics.
