Why study Film Studies at William Farr? Film Studies at William Farr offers an exciting opportunity to explore one of the most influential art forms of the modern world. At A level, you’ll gain the analytical skills to understand how films create meaning, shape culture, and reflect the societies that produce them. Our department provides expert teaching, with a supportive and dedicated team, allowing you to thrive both academically and creatively. What will you study? You’ll examine a diverse range of films across different periods, styles, and national cinemas. Highlights include exploring Hollywood from its early years to the present day, studying British and global filmmaking traditions, analysing genre conventions such as film noir or contemporary sci-fi, and investigating how directors use cinematography, editing, sound, and narrative to influence audiences. You’ll also produce your own creative or written project, culminating in the production of a short film or a script and digital storyboard based on a specific genre study - allowing you to put theory into practice, and develop a personal filmmaking or scriptwriting voice.
