Course summary

Areas of study will include practical exploration of surface decoration and dyeing, fabric manipulation and formation, pattern cutting and modelling, investigation of fibres and fabrics, commercial practice, fashion history, designers and social influences on modern design and technology. This subject also requires design and make Non-examined Assessment. THE FUTURE: 1 in 11 people in the UK presently work in the creative industries, of which Fashion and Textiles related industries are the largest employer of all the UK’s creative industries. Presently, the creative economy is rising faster than the wider job economy, as creativity becomes increasingly highly valued in the 21st century job market. Studying textiles can lead you to a wide variety of exciting careers, such as Design, Retail, Merchandising, Journalism, Photography, Marketing, Bio Design, Green Chemistry and Textiles Technology. Fashion and Textiles is frequently studied with Art & Design, but also goes well with other subjects such as the Sciences, Languages and Business. YEAR 12: • Exploration and experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques • Study of historical design and social influences on modern design and technology • One practical investigation • One mock written examination YEAR 13: • Study of fibres and fabrics • Study of commercial and industrial practice • One major practical NEA project (50% of A Level) • Two written examinations (50% of A Level)
