Course summary
Drama and Theatre at A Level is about exploring the pathways of being a Performer, Designer and Director for Theatre. During the course you will go to see at least 2 live theatre shows, create your own Drama as well as perform extracts from 2 pre-existing plays. You can also choose to take the design route of the course meaning you act as a costume, light, set or sound designer for performance. You will study 2 plays in depth for the end exam but you respond to questions with your own creative ideas and vision - there is a focus on how you would breathe life into these plays. The course is about the enjoyment and magic of theatre, its importance in our country and its place in our society. The vast majority of your lessons will be delivered practically. The 2 texts to be studied for the exam must be explored practically and visually as performers, designers and directors. Although there will need to be lessons where we read past papers and practice exam questions and unpick exemplars we aim to keep you as active as possible during your drama lessons. Drama A level can lead to careers or further study in: Acting on stage or screen, Backstage work in theatres, Technical work such as lighting, sound and special effects, Creative design roles such as puppetry, costume and prop making or set design, Teaching. But a qualification in Drama is rooted in developing the skills of: • Communication • Presentation • Adaptability, Resilience and compromise • Liaising with other departments and individuals • Group work skills • Descriptive, analytical and evaluative writing • Honing of vocal and physical skills Skills like these are highly sought after for many degree courses as well as careers that seek outgoing, confident, creative and risk taking people.
