Course summary

A level Further Mathematics is a course for anyone wishing to study mathematics in high detail. Students will build on their A level knowledge of trigonometry, differentiation and integration, logarithms and vectors and look at new topics such as complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction and polar coordinates. Students will also look at 2 optional units to be chosen from Statistics, Mechanics and Additional Pure. The Statistics includes more statistical distributions such as Poisson, Geometric and Uniform. Then students will analyse bi-variate data sets by looking at correlation and regression lines. On the Mechanics side, students will investigate new topics such as circular motion, work, energy and power and centres of mass. The Additional Pure element looks at recurrence relations, modular arithmetic, types of groups and partial differentiation. In lessons students will use a range of resources such as textbooks, graphical calculators, graph plotting software, and will undertake some practical mechanics experiments using pulleys, timers and weights. The course is particularly helpful for students studying Physics or Computer Science and some of our students who have studied A level Further Mathematics have gone on to study, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Medicine, Architecture, Chemistry or find apprenticeships in a range of fields from Banking to Computer Programming.
