Course summary

Biology A Level is for you if: 1. You find the study of living organisms and biological processes interesting. 2. You enjoy researching and reading about innovative new technologies. 3. You are a keen and talented biologist who wishes to study the subject to a far greater level of complexity and maybe wish to pursue the sciences at higher education. Topic 1: Lifestyle, Health and Risk: Anatomy of the heart, cardiovascular diseases, lifestyle factors, atherosclerosis, analysis of methodology, correlations and causation. Topic 2: Genes and Health: Cystic Fibrosis, gas exchange surfaces, DNA structure and replication, protein synthesis, enzymes, genetic screening and monohybrid inheritance. Topic 3: Voice of the Genome: Cell ultrastructure, cell division, fertilisation, stem cells, gene expression, cell differentiation, epigenetics and the effect of environment on phenotype. Topic 4: Biodiversity and Natural Resources: Biodiversity, natural resources used by humans, taxonomy, evolution, niche, adaptation, sustainability and the role of zoos and seed banks in the conservation of endangered species. Topic 5: On the Wild Side: Biochemistry of photosynthesis, ecology, Global Warming, palynology, decomposition. Topic 6: Immunity, Infection and Forensics: Forensic pathology, analytical techniques, bacterial and viral infections, immunology, development of drugs, virology. Topic 7: Run for your Life: Physiology and anatomy, exercise, biochemistry of respiration and medical technology in sport. Topic 8: Grey Matter: Brain imagery, Parkinson’s Disease, drugs, Human Genome Project, Genetically Modified Organisms.
