Course summary
SBUA Sixth Form are proud to offer a rich and challenging mathematics curriculum designed to cater for a wide range of abilities and aspirations. Our A level Mathematics course (Edexcel) builds on the foundations of GCSE and deepens students’ understanding of both pure and applied mathematics. The course consists of two-thirds pure mathematics — including algebra, calculus and proof — and one-third applied mathematics, split evenly between statistics and mechanics. This course is ideal for students who have achieved at least a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics and wish to develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills. We have strong links with King’s College London, through which a number of our students benefit from free tutoring and enrichment opportunities. We also support and encourage applications to Oxford University’s COMPOS programme, which allows students to explore advanced mathematical and physical concepts in a university-level setting. Students will develop their skills and understanding in both statistics and mechanics as part of this study programme. Topics that will be covered include algebraic indices, quadratics, graphs and transformers, and trigonometric ratios, identities, and equations. As part of the mechanics curriculum students will learn to understand forces and motion and develop their ability to evaluate hypotheses.
