Welcome to Telford College

Principal’s Welcome

I am delighted that you are considering Telford College for the next stage of your education journey.

Lawrence Wood Principal

“It is important to find the right course for you, and we have the widest range of choice in the area’’

LAWRENCE WOOD
Principal and Chief Executive

It is our job to ensure students have the best possible experience at college, and to do all we can to support you to achieve during your time with us.

Our students impress me greatly . . . dedicated to their studies, full of personality and ambitious for their futures.

Our staff are highly experienced and experts in their fields, committed to doing all they can to support students to achieve.

As Telford & Wrekin’s only further education college, we play an important role in supporting our local communities to thrive.

We are setting people up with the skills they need – not just technical skills, but soft skills around communication and teamwork too.

These soft skills are just as important for the development of a workforce. I hear this loud and clear from many Shropshire employers.

Our partnerships with employers play an important part in the way we design and deliver the curriculum, backed up by significant investment in resources and facilities, including the development of new campuses in Telford’s Station Quarter to add to our base in Wellington.

The college is a mature environment, more like university than school, but we do have high expectations in terms of attendance, homework and being committed to your college course.

We are committed to supporting students to achieve excellent examination results, as well as developing those broader skills that our industry partners tell us they value so highly.

Coming to college is an excellent step before university or employment and we work hard to support you to have a successful onward journey when you leave college.

Our work with adult learners continues to go from strength to strength too. Many people come to us to upskill or retrain, to get back into employment. It’s never too late to learn a new skill in this fast-moving world.

It is important to find the right course for you, and we have the widest range of choice in the area. From A levels and Apprenticeships to T-Levels, university-level modules, and a wide range of vocational programmes, there has never been a wider choice.

Our open events provide you with an opportunity to meet with and speak to subject staff, get a feel for the college, and prepare for this exciting next step.

Jordan Barrett

September 2021

Employed

Jordan is part of the team of scientists which helped develop the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. “To work on a trial and potentially be vaccinated with a vaccine I helped with is amazing and gratifying,” he said. Jordan, who attended the King Street campus from 2011-13, studying biology, chemistry, physics and maths. “I already intended to go to university when I started, but the college really raised my aspirations and encouraged me to aim for a higher university,” he said. “All my teachers were encouraging of my ability, but my chemistry teacher was the one who really convinced me I could go to Oxford. I didn’t think that was realistic prior to that. My application was also supported a lot by a personal tutor, which was instrumental in me getting into Oxford – and where I am today.”

Joe Lockley

September 2021

Employed

Joe (pictured making a TV ad with Anthony Joshua) completed a BTEC in science and exercise with us, and is now the multi-award-winning boss of Brightstar Boxing. He says: “Telford College gave me a lot of opportunities, and I’ve tried to take full advantage of all of them – I managed to do some mentor volunteering and coaching whilst at college which kick-started my love for supporting others through sport. I still keep in touch with some of the staff and have made friends for life at the college. I have fantastic memories of two college trips to Paris – and have since returned to the city to talk about the transformation that sport can make in achieving world change to ministers and global leaders as part of the UNESCO global ministerial sports conference.”

Jade Hibbert

September 2021

Employed

Jade was with us both as a student, and later as a tutor too. After several years with Shrewsbury Town In The Community, she joined West Mercia Police as a trainer, working to help spot signs of vulnerability and exploitation. From there, she became exploitation lead for the West Midlands Violence Reduction Unit. In April 2020 she was nominated for an ‘unsung hero’ award for her commitment to tackling child exploitation across Telford & Wrekin. She said: “I believe I owe everything I’ve gone on to do, to my days at Telford College. My outstanding experience wouldn’t have been what it was without the exceptional staff who treat you as a real person instead of just a number or statistic.”
