Welcome to West Gate School

“This is a school where everyone makes sure that pupils’ well-being and safety come first.”(Ofsted 2021)West Gate is a popular, over-subscribed setting for 200 4 – 19-year-olds, with a range of learning needs. Our pupils have moderate to severe learning difficulties, autism spectrum conditions and other highly complex needs. Three quarters of our pupils have autism as part of their profile of need, and we have developed a curriculum offer and school environment to support this. We moved into our new building in 2014 and have a range of excellent facilities to support a rich and diverse curriculum offer. If you visit us, you will meet our inspiring and friendly pupils who make such a positive contribution to school life. They are encouraged to succeed by a committed staff team, who put the children at the centre of all they do. Our vision for every pupil (and staff member) is for them to achieve their potential, so they can be their best. We aim to create a safe, fun, and supportive environment that inspires everyone to learn and develop. We work with a range of specialist practitioners to make sure we deliver inspiring learning opportunities. Our pathways model ensures each learner has the right opportunities to build on their skills. We support pupils to be as independent as they can and ensure they learn the skills they need to be successful in their adult lives. Similarly, we ensure pupils have the chance to access a range of learning opportunities within the local community to prepare them for their next steps. This includes our ever growing work experience and routes to employment offer. We are a reflective school and constantly review what we do to make sure we are the best we can be.We welcome the active involvement of families and provide a range of opportunities to get involved with school life throughout the year. We also have our charity, 'Friends of West Gate’ who go the extra mile to support us in fund raising activities to enhance our provision. We pride ourselves on our welcoming and friendly ethos and are determined to keep improving what we do for our pupils as they continue their ‘learning for life’.We are all very proud of our school and our amazing pupils.RhianHead Teacher

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
We have identified opportunities within West Gate that provide a first step on the Routes to Employment programme.

Voluntary Work and Work Experience
We encourage the students on work experience to participate fully in all areas of the school curriculum and to take part in activities involving the pupils both in and out of school.
Educational Visits
We offer a range of out of school visits and will request a voluntary contribution when necessary.
Travel Training
Pupils also take part in Travel Training, enabling them to access public transport independently. We have highly trained staff who have completed a recognised training course in supporting pupils to be as independent as they can be on public transport.
