Welcome Message

To be a part of Upton Court Grammar School’s Sixth Form is an incredible opportunity. For future students; you will be part of a school community in which everyone, from your tutor, to your subject teachers, to the pastoral staff, will do everything they can to support your success in all aspects of your academic and personal development. For the staff, we get to work with inspiring young minds, students who, by joining our Sixth Form, have committed themselves to academic, personal and societal success through hard work, enthusiasm for new opportunities, initiative, creativity and genuine care and compassion for others.

Students who are a part of Upton Court Grammar School’s Sixth Form community believe that manners and courtesy are essential, and that to wear our uniform is a privilege and is to be done with pride. If you choose to join our Sixth Form, you will benefit from a school that actively encourages students to develop their skills both inside and beyond the classroom – your experiences could range from opportunities such as participating in Mock Bar competitions in a Crown Court; organising a Valentine’s party for local senior citizens; taking a tour of London’s museums and galleries; engaging in Biology, Psychology and Geography master classes throughout the year with scientists from Royal Holloway, University of London and a symposium at the university; leading student societies on anything you are passionate about; visiting Oxford University; rock-climbing and kayaking at a local adventure centre; qualifying in and teaching First Aid and attending a variety of international trips around the world, from Belgium, to Switzerland and even farther afield.

We expect great things from all our pupils, and in return, we will offer you a multitude of opportunities to help you to thrive academically, personally and socially. We will do this by providing you with:

• A broad curriculum offer of academic subjects, delivered by dedicated expert teachers.

 • A daily pastoral programme delivered via registration periods with a form tutor, who will help you adapt to UCGS Sixth Form life, offer you pastoral and academic guidance, as well as supporting you with the UCAS process in Year 13.

 • Comprehensive study skills support, with a focus on exploring effective study methods and meta cognitive approaches to your learning.

• A strong focus on wellbeing and personal health, to support you with managing any stress associated with academic study.

• Private study lessons in your own Sixth Form Study Centre, a space designed to support independent study, with access to computers and group study areas.

• Access to our outstanding Sixth Form Centre, with three dedicated spaces for KS5 students, including a silent study room, a meeting room and a group study space.

• Opportunities to contribute to the school and wider community, and to feel valued for your contributions to these communities.

• A range of student leadership opportunities, from working on the Student Leadership Team, to establishing and leading student societies on any topic of interest.

• The opportunity to develop your personal goals and aspirations through our Ad Astra and Super Curriculums.

• A diverse range of extra-curricular opportunities, and access to scholars events and our alumni network, with strong links to leading universities and employers.

• Excellent support for your post-KS5 pathways, including outstanding support with UCAS applications, starting in Year 12, with ‘Futures Day’ conferences, and other support sessions on future study, careers and life skills.

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
There is a wide range of support available to help you make the most of your potential in Sixth Form. Sixth Formers have tutorial periods every morning, which follow a structure to help you make the most of the opportunities you will have. Our pastoral programme includes sessions that cover student wellbeing, careers and UCAS, study skills, current affairs and enrichment opportunities. The Sixth Form tutor team are experienced teachers who are knowledgeable about UCAS and other Sixth Form specific issues and are on-hand to support students with any queries they have about A Level study, and careers/further education pathways. There is also an Academic Mentoring programme in the Sixth Form, where students who are finding the transition to Sixth Form study difficult or who are struggling to reach their academic potential are assigned a mentor to help them manage their progress and workload. This is a positive process which many Sixth Form students ask to be part of. The school develops very close relationships not just with you, but also your parents. Parents are able to contact the Sixth Form Coordinator to discuss any concerns they may have. We also send interim reports home through the year and hold Sixth Form parents’ evenings and also a Learning Review Day at the beginning of the academic year, which allows parents to gain an understanding of the expectations of studying at Upton Court Grammar School.

The Student Leadership Team

The Student Leadership Team at Upton Court Grammar School play an integral role in the running of the school. They are trusted in the same way that a member of staff is and take on much more than ceremonial duties. The Student Leadership Team is selected every December, through a stringent recruitment process. Different student leaders are responsible for leading the school, the Sixth Form, communication, organising fundraising activities and leading lower school assemblies and events. Competition to become a member of the Student Leadership Team is fierce and there are a lot of duties and responsibilities involved, but it is a fantastic way to gain experience in a variety of roles and learn how to lead, delegate and work as a member of a team.

Scholars Club

The Sixth Form Scholar’s team meets at lunch once a week and consists of a range of events, activities and talks that will enrich your education. The aims are to enrich your education and give you the chance to interact with outside speakers, difficult ideas and issues within the modern world, to prepare you for life at university and in a professional or business context by helping you to develop your ‘soft-skills’, to enhance your UCAS application and help to prepare you for university application and interviews. Typical events might take the form of a talk from a doctor or lawyer, former students talking about their experiences, discussing university interview questions or watching an intellectual film. The Scholar’s team is open to everybody in the Sixth Form and can be used toward your Ad Astra activities. It also holds a very popular annual trip to London at the end of the school year, called Scholars Day.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

There are a wide variety of sports clubs and other societies at Upton Court Grammar School, and Sixth Formers are very welcome to become involved in them. They are on offer at a variety of times, but mostly at lunch and after-school. You can get involved and learn or discover new talents and skills. They also all count towards completion of your Ad Astra curriculum.
