Extra-curricular
We believe that the two years spent in Sixth Form should be a chance for students to achieve and develop in a wide range of different ways beyond the academic. There are lots of different opportunities to get involved and we hope that students will take advantage of these so that they may continue to grow as individuals and enrich their last two years in school. The old adage ‘the more you put in the more you will get out’ is absolutely true of Sixth Form and we hope that students will decide to throw themselves into the life of the school, continue with an existing activity or take up a new opportunity or skill. Extra-curricular activities help students to learn about themselves and develop and use their skills and knowledge in different contexts to help them to prepare for their next steps after school.
Major team sports are popular with our students, many of whom go on to represent the District and County. All Sixth Form students participate in Wednesday afternoon sport sessions when they can take part in a range of recreational sporting activities or train with our teams in competitive sport. Sixth Form students take a lead role in drama and music activities with some of them taking responsibility for leading groups of younger school students in activities. Many students continue with instrumental and singing lessons and as part of our Elective Programme students can complete their Gold and Silver Arts award.
Students are offered a wide variety of opportunities to extend their learning through visits and trips. Some of these are field trips associated with courses such as Biology, History, English Literature and Geography, some are whole school activities open to Sixth Formers such as the Music and Sports Tours and Language exchanges, and many others are cross-curricular such as our biannual visits to New York and Washington DC and to Rome.
Each year we have a Year 12 visit to London; students are encouraged to plan their own itinerary for the day to pursue their different interests, in recent years this has included a range of museums, the zoo, the London Eye, a West End show, as well as other sight-seeing and of course shopping. The students also have an annual visit in December to the German Christmas Markets in Birmingham.
Over the last few years we have also encouraged our students to form teams to enter a range of competitions including the Kinsley Napley Legal Apprentice, Student Investor Challenge, Girls Get Set Challenge, the National Trade Academy Programme Competition, Young Enterprise and Vex Robotics Competition.
Leadership is an essential part of our Sixth Form as we expect all our students to be role models for year 9-11. It is integral within your learning and Sixth Form experiences, and there are also many formal leadership opportunities. During the Spring Term Year 12 students and staff appoint Head Students, their Deputies and a number of Ambassadors. This team is encouraged to play a leadership role in the school community arranging events for students in years 9-11 and acting as ambassadors for the school. You can also apply to be a Subject Champion, stand for election as House Leaders and take the lead role in the House Council and managing House events. We also encourage our Sixth Form students to take a lead in organising a range of clubs and activities for younger students and organising a wide variety of whole school activities.
Sixth Formers are very active in fundraising and charitable activities throughout the school and local community. The Interact Charity Committee has organised Talent Shows to showcase the various bands and performers in school and Sixth Form students traditionally take on the leadership roles on the committee acting as President, Treasurer and Secretary.
Our Sixth Form Tutors are well informed about the current state of admissions to Degree courses, Apprenticeship opportunities and graduate employment through constant in-service training. You will have access to ‘Unifrog’ a platform which supports you with the whole process for your next steps- from initial research to drafting your applications. The Careers section in the Learning Resource Centre contains a wide range of reference material and there is also a library of careers and university guides in the Sixth Form Office. Our Careers Hub is situated within the Sixth Form Centre and you will have access to our Careers Research room during independent study time.
The process of Sixth Form Careers Guidance begins in January of Year 12 with our extensive programme of preparation for Higher Education, apprenticeships and employment. A ‘Next Step’ Conference is held in June of Year 12 where you will attend seminars run by a broad range of university departments, as well as speakers from a range of apprenticeship and employment settings. We visit the UCAS fair in Worcester, Cardiff University and the Three Counties Careers Fair in Malvern. At the end of the Summer Term in Year 12 you will complete work experience aimed at helping you to gain experience relevant to your future plans. We also participate in Cambridge University’s HE+ programme which includes a programme of lectures in different subject areas and university advice and Oxbridge interview practice.
All Year 12 and 13 students can access a school Careers interview with our Careers Team, and we hold a biannual Careers Fair.
