Welcome to Appleby Grammar School

ou will find Appleby Grammar School is warm and friendly place where all individuals are known and valued. Safeguarding and welfare are high on our agenda with our community caring for all its members, including our most vulnerable and those with SEND. Students are given opportunities to experience a curriculum in its fullest sense that is carefully sequenced and appropriate to our location. Woven into everything that we do are the school values of:Kindness, Respect and Community. Our school community are encouraged to live out these values in all that we do here. Ensuring that our daily interactions are based upon these values is fundamental at Appleby Grammar School. You will find strong positive relationships between the students themselves and between students and the staff who support them.Students study a wide variety of subjects at Key Stage 3 with the core subjects complemented by creative and practical opportunities. At Key Stage 4, students study GCSEs before moving into Sixth Form for A-Levels. Academic success is important here too and in 2024 the school had some of its best ever GCSE results. Our Sixth Form leavers progressed into their place of choice whether that be university, apprenticeship or the world of work. There is no doubt that schools can be both a caring nurturing environment and a place of academic rigour and Appleby Grammar School is just that. There are a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom with a bustling sporting programme, music and creative arts all features, alongside our comprehensive educational visits offer. You will see plenty of these examples on our website. The school itself is housed mainly in 1962 block, the 1887 building supplemented by the Whiteheads Laboratory. We also have exclusive access to Appleby Sports Centre four days a week for all our PE lessons. That is on the verge of changing with work due to start in the next few months on a state-of-the-art building that will transform the school’s physical appearance and create a generational change in the learning environment for the young people of Appleby and its surrounds. Our work with the community is burgeoning as links are established and re-established. We have strong links with our local churches, rotary club and sports clubs to name but a few. We welcome contact from all our neighbours. We are also part of a group of schools within the South Lakes Federation who collaborate on a range of educational matters. You are welcome to come and see us in action and witness first-hand what a fantastic school we have. Mr P J Nicholson - Headteacher
