Extra-curricular
At Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, we’re all about giving students real-world opportunities to grow, explore, and thrive. From creative projects to leadership roles, our enrichment activities help students push boundaries, discover new passions, and build essential teamwork skills. It’s all part of preparing for life beyond the classroom – and having some fun along the way!
Our students benefit from a range of enriching opportunities designed to support their academic and personal development. These include organised trips to Oxbridge and attendance at Cambridge Open Days, offering valuable insight into life at top-tier universities. We also work in partnership with Aspire Liverpool to guide students through the application process for leading universities. Eligible sixth form students may access tutoring provided by the University of Liverpool, enhancing their subject knowledge and academic confidence. In collaboration with Bionow, we offer a dedicated mentoring programme - details of which can be found in their latest blog. Additionally, our Mental Health Champions initiative promotes wellbeing across the student body, while our Employability Skills Challenges help students develop the key skills required for future career success.
Our students engage in a wide range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) lessons, masterclasses, and projects designed to inspire innovation and develop technical expertise. Highlights include the Lab Metalytics Project in partnership with Alfred H Knight, as well as the AstraZeneca Vaccine Challenge, which fosters real-world problem-solving. Industry-led masterclasses are regularly delivered by both local and national leaders, such as Ford - whose recent investment in the local area exemplifies their ongoing commitment to skills development. Students benefit from access to advanced scientific equipment, including a Hitachi Scanning Electron Microscope, and practical medical experience through the use of SimMan and Annie dolls in our medical simulation suite. Our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) programme builds leadership and resilience, while further academic enrichment is provided through subjects such as Further Mathematics and initiatives like the MeDeVet Programme and Clinical Skills for Healthcare. We also run a Primary Schools Outreach Programme to support younger learners and foster a sense of community. International collaboration is encouraged through our partnership with Global Alliance, enabling joint projects with schools abroad. Additionally, students regularly attend masterclasses hosted by local universities, including Liverpool John Moores University, further enhancing their academic and career readiness.
Our students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of prestigious programmes and competitions that nurture innovation, technical skills, and industry insight. The Unilever Inspire Programme provides valuable exposure to real-world business and science challenges, while the Business of Science Innovation Awards encourage creativity and entrepreneurial thinking. Students also take part in nationally recognised competitions such as the Big Bang Science Competition and the WorldSkills Engineering and Technology Competitions, where they can showcase their talents on a broader stage. In addition, the VEX IQ Robotics Competition offers a hands-on, collaborative environment for developing problem-solving and engineering skills through robotics design and programming.
Students are encouraged to engage in advanced research and academic development through a range of specialised initiatives. The Baltic Research Institute offers unique opportunities for students to participate in high-level research projects, fostering analytical and critical thinking skills. Our Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Research Programme further supports independent learning, allowing students to explore a topic of their choice in depth, preparing them for the demands of higher education. Additionally, the MeDeVet Newsletters provide regular updates on developments within the medical, dental, and veterinary pathways, keeping students informed and engaged with current trends and opportunities in the healthcare sector.
