HomeSchool Profile

Welcome to Carwarden House Community School

We hope our website will give you a flavour of what we do and how we work and encourages you to visit to see us in action.

We are a LAN (learning & additional needs) special school for students between the ages of 11 and 19 with an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) identifying special educational and health needs. Our students have a wide range of needs including moderate learning difficulties, autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, speech, language and communication needs and other conditions associated with learning difficulties and / or medical needs. We became an academy on 1st August 2014.

Our strong shared vision - learning for life, independence and employment - was developed in discussion with staff, Trustees, students and parents. It encapsulates all that we endeavour to instil in our students by the time they leave us to take their place in the world.

Parents tell us in very strong terms that they want us to focus on developing life skills and independence in their son or daughter. Our shared vision and all that flows from it reflects that ambition for every student.

We are highly regarded and as a result, attract students from many neighbouring local authorities.

If you are a parent or carer, or thinking of joining our staff, I encourage you to follow this up with a visit. The staff and students will be delighted to meet you and tell you why we are so proud of our school. Please refer to the New Parents / Prospective Parents page for more information on our open days this year.

Enrichment Activities

We believe that effective learning and our students’ ability to make progress is not limited to classroom activities but should also be supported by giving them the opportunity to take and apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge in the community. Our fleet of cars and minibuses enables us to take our students into the wider community on a very regular basis. This approach is further enhanced by personalised work experience and FE college opportunities for all students in KS4 & KS5, access to a wide range of leisure activities and numerous educational trips and residential opportunities (both at home and abroad).

Duke of Edinburgh Award – Bronze Award

The DofE Award is a long standing, highly regarded and widely recognised qualification for young people in the UK and elsewhere in the world. The DofE participant is challenged to succeed in a number of different areas; the 4 sections of the DofE Bronze Award are: Physical, Skill, Volunteering and Expedition. For the first three sections, one must be undertaken regularly for 6 months whilst the remaining two are for 3 months each. For those choosing it in Y10 or Y12, our DofE programme is run as part of the school timetable with the staff organising the activities for each section and maintaining the evidence required by each participant to demonstrate the progress made towards achieving their award. The DofE Award is an individual programme, and as such the expectations for each section should be tailored to meet a participant's capabilities.
