We cater for approximately 204 young people between the ages of 11 and 19 who experience severe learning difficulties and profound, multiple and complex medical needs. A growing number of our young poeple are also autistic. Portland offers co-educational day provision to young people from a catchment area that covers the city of Sunderland and beyond.

Portland Academy is part of ‘The Ascent Academies’ Trust’, a multi-academy trust which currently consists of 5 special schools across Sunderland, Durham, Stockton and North Yorkshire. This partnership provides us with a wealth of experience and knowledge and opens up many opportunities for working together to improve outcomes for our young people.

The school has excellent facilities, including a social café, therapy pool, sensory room, OT Room, woodland walk, outdoor adventure area and bike track. These, together with a relevant, progressive and challenging curriculum delivered and supported by committed staff, enables us to offer a wonderful range of varied opportunities to enrich our young peoples’ lives.
