Government and Politics
Course summary
Discussion and debate will play a very important part in both courses. You should develop the ability to understand different points of view as well as to consider alternatives objectively. You should also learn to argue your own case in a convincing manner, both orally and on paper, and to select relevant evidence to support your points. Initial studies focus on 'Politics and People' and how democracy, political participation, political parties, elections and pressure groups work. You will study how the UK is governed, including Parliament, The Prime Minster, The Cabinet and our Civil Liberties. You will also learn about the political ideologies of liberalism, conservatism, socialism, anarchism, nationalism, feminism, ecologism and multiculturalism.
