Course summary

Biology is the study of the mechanisms that underpin all living organisms. It covers the rapidly changing fields of genetics and biotechnology. You will study digestive, circulatory and gas exchange systems, including the role of enzymes as biological catalysts, and passive and active transport across membranes. Also, the similarities and differences in the biochemical basis and cellular organisation of living organisms are discussed. The course examines structured communities within dynamic and largely stable ecosystems through which energy and chemical elements are recycled. Students sample different communities on an Ecology residential field trip. The course also looks at the response to stimuli, including the control of heart rate, transmission of nerve impulses, muscle contraction and the use of gene cloning technologies to design new industrial and medical processes.
