Welcome to Saffron Walden County High School

Sixth Form WelcomeWe are an inclusive and inspiring Sixth Form that is large enough to provide variety but small enough to feel personal. With 50 different Level 3 subjects, including a hybrid model of A-Levels and Level 3 diplomas, we will help you achieve your potential in whatever field you choose.Innovative timetabling also means that the average class size is just eighteen. You can trust us to guide you for the next steps of your education – most of our students secure their first choice universities, and the academic progress made within the Sixth Form is simply outstanding. For the past three years, progress made by students is amongst the very best in England (in the top 2%) for both schools and colleges. In 2022, we were delighted that 221 of our students received offers for their preferred universities; 41% of our students went to study at Russell Group universities and five students are now studying at Oxbridge. Here, students receive teaching of the highest quality, while extensive pastoral guidance provides students with personalised care. In particular, the support we offer during the UCAS process is exceptional; compatible students work together, with individual supervision provided by a specialist tutor. Students applying for apprenticeships and employment receive similar guidance, as we have our own careers advisor and a dedicated programme of progression. Our Sixth Form is about much more than academic success. As one of our students said to Ofsted inspectors, ‘we are encouraged to be well-rounded individuals, not just academically successful’. We believe the Sixth Form is an ideal stepping-stone to higher education or employment, and we encourage students to develop the skills needed to succeed independently. Our students are capable of great things, as seen by our amazing Charities Week, during which students raise over £10,000. The active Student Union provides a voice in student well-being, whilst our Council plays a positive role in teaching and learning. Other highlights for students include our Senior Citizens’ Party, as well as numerous trips including skiing in Austria, exchanges to China, music and sports tours, to name but a few. Every year, there is also a thriving Gold Duke of Edinburgh cohort. We are constantly amazed by the wealth of talent amongst our students. Drama, Art, Music and Sport all flourish at this Sixth Form. Our best advertisement is our students – meet them at Open Evening and read about them in local publications and the press. We would thoroughly recommend that you experience for yourself the inspiring ethos of our Sixth Form.Amy KennedyDirector Sixth Form

Ellie Griffiths

September 2010

Employed

At SWCHS Sixth Form, Ellie took Maths, Further Maths, Computing, Physics and Economics. She then studied Manufacturing Engineering at Cambridge University. She became a Graduate Software Engineer at Renishaw, then took a punt on an internship in the games industry. She was a Technical Artist intern at King (makers of Candy Crush), then hired full-time as a Graduate Technical Artist. Technical Art is the intersection of art and code; Ellie makes tools to automate boring tasks, create shaders and effects for the game, organise work so it makes sense, and optimise the game so it runs better. King is a great place to work, and Ellie is very happy she ended up there!

Rebecca Tomlinson

September 2013

Employed

Rebecca attended SWCHS from 2008 - 2015, during which time she served as a Prefect and a member of the Sixth Form Committee. She focused on humanities for her A-Levels, studying Latin, Classical Civilisation and English Literature, as well as completing an EPQ in Latin Literature.

George Peasgood

September 2012

Employed

George attended SWCHS on his way to becoming a World Class Athlete. He was able to combine his A-Level studies in Biology, Leisure Studies and PE with racing across the world for the Great British Para Triathlon Team. During his time in Sixth Form, he raced internationally on six occasions, competing to the highest standard. On leaving Sixth Form with the necessary grades, he studied for a Sports Science degree at Loughborough University. Here, he took racing to another level and was selected to compete in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games

Enrichment Activities

Show all activities
Academic Enrichment is a compulsory course at SWCHS Sixth Form. It allows students to broaden their post-16 education, by reinforcing and enhancing the subjects studied up to GCSE and being followed at A-Level. As part of this course, we offer a fortnightly lecture, where students have the opportunity to listen to topical debates and talks. On top of building their CV throughout the year, each week students will reflect on their learning in other subjects, build on revision techniques, organisational skills, along with discussing current affairs and future opportunities. There is no examination or qualification for Academic Enrichment.
