Course summary

A-level Media Studies engages students in the in-depth study of media products about four areas of the theoretical framework: Media Language - How the different modes and language associated with different media forms communicate multiple meanings are communicated. How developing technologies affect media language. Media Representation - The way events, issues, individuals, and social groups are represented through processes of selection and combination of media output. Media Industries - Processes of production, distribution, and circulation by organizations, groups, and individuals in a global context. The specialized and institutionalized nature of media production, distribution, and circulation. Media Audiences - How audiences are grouped and categorized by media industries, including by age, gender, and social class, as well as by lifestyle and taste. How media producers target, attract, reach, address, and potentially construct audiences. How audiences interpret and interact with the media. At the center of all we do in Media Studies, is the study of the products. The four aspects of the framework are considered about these products. Students are required to study media products from all of the following media forms: Audio-visual forms (TV, film, radio, advertising and marketing, video games, and music video); Online forms (social and participatory media, video games, music videos, newspapers, magazines, advertising, and marketing); Print forms (newspapers, magazines, advertising and marketing).
