Year 1 Topics: Foundations of atomic structure, bonding and properties. Introduction to organic molecules. In depth study of inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. Applications of organic chemistry in the development of medicines. Year 2 Topics: Polymers and Life Chemical Industry Oceans Developing Metals Colour by Design All practical work will be written up and formally assessed. This aspect of the course is awarded either a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’. It is recorded on your A Level certificate but does not contribute to your final grade. However a pass is vital if you wish to study a science related subject at University.
5+ GCSE Grades A* - C including English and Mathematics and a grade A*-B in Chemistry Students have achieved Grade 5 or above in FIVE separate subjects ideally including English and Mathematics. In order to study a subject at A Level, you would be required to have at Grade 5 in that particular subject if you have studied it at GCSE.
There are three written exams: Fundamentals of Chemistry, 2 hours 15 minutes. This paper is a mixture of multiple choice, short and long answer questions. Chemical Literacy, 2 hours 15 minutes. This paper also includes advanced notice material that is made available prior to the examination on a focused topic that differs each year. Practical Aspects of Chemistry, 1 hour 30 minutes.
