Course summary

An ‘A’ Level in German builds upon the linguistic skills and vocabulary gained during your GCSE course. There is a greater emphasis on both grammatical knowledge and spontaneity in order to equip you to write essays and have a detailed discussion in the exams. The Year 12 course covers a variety of contemporary issues: - Aspects of German society (family and relationships, the digital world, youth culture) - Artistic culture in the German (festivals and traditions, art and architecture, cultural life in Berlin) - An authentic film (‘Good-bye Lenin!’ directed by Wolfgang Becker) The year 13 course covers further contemporary issues: - Multiculturalism in German-speaking society (immigration, integration, racism) - Aspects of political life in the German-speaking world (Germany within the EU, youth politics, the reunification of Germany and it’s consequences) - An authentic text (‘Der Vorleser’ by Bernhard Schlink) - Independent research project (IRP) on a subject of your choice
