Biology
Thomas Bennett Community College
Course summary
The course will be 100% exam-based with compulsory practicals that will need to be carried out, in order to be able to complete all the expected questions. ● In Year 1 of the course you will study the fundamentals of biology including associated practical skills. ● In Year 2 of the course you will study more in-depth biology including associated practical skills. ● Although your practical skills are no longer examined and marked in this course you will be expected to know how all relevant techniques work and are used, therefore practicals will still be a big part of this course. ● Resources we use include a standard text but you will also be expected to supplement this with other research from websites that will be provided at the beginning of the course. ● Biology class sizes are usually quite small with 5 to 10 students – this is a good number for group discussion and group work, also allowing you all to support each other. ● To study Biology you should have a keen interest in science and finding out about the latest research which can lead to discussion in lessons. ● To succeed in Biology, research, and individual study are an important part of the course. You should be prepared to work with others and in some cases lead the class discussions on the materials you have been studying. ● You will be expected to come to lessons having read the relevant area in the standard textbook before the lesson. This will allow you to get the most out of lessons and you will probably arrive at the lesson with questions already prepared.
