Do you want a career that makes a difference in people’s lives? Are you interested in working with people from different backgrounds? Do you want to improve your care and communication skills? Have you thought about working in areas such as child care, education, social work, nursing, and medicine? If your answer is yes to any of these then you should consider studying Health and Social Care at A level. Students of Health and Social Care will gain a greater awareness and understanding of current issues such as employment, service provision, rights and responsibilities within the workplace, and health and wellbeing. ▪ You will learn how to effectively care for, and communicate with people with different needs such as the elderly, children, and people with disabilities. ▪ You will learn about the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development across the human lifespan, and the factors affecting development, and the effects of aging. ▪ You will explore what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organizations. ▪ You will focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individuals’ care and support needs, which are the foundation of all the care disciplines. ▪ You will study the application of sociological approaches to health and social care, and explore social inequalities, demographic change, and patterns and trends in social groups. ▪ You will explore key theoretical perspectives that have been put forward on psychological and physical development and how they are applied in different health and social care settings. The course provides a broad introduction to the Health and Social Care sector. Many students decide to continue studying specific aspects of Health and Social Care at university or use the skills they have gained in their chosen profession. The skills and the knowledge you will develop will be relevant to a wide range of careers including: • Arts Therapies (Music, Art, Drama) • Care Work • Child Care • Nursing and medicine • Occupational Therapy • Pediatrics • Social Work • Teaching /Speech and Language Therapy • Youth Work

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above. Plus a grade 4 in the relevant subject area. Grade 4/C or above in English language and grade 4/C in another humanities subject.

How you'll be assessed

The course is assessed through a combination of examinations, formal tasks set by the exam board, and coursework which involves the creation of research evidence assignments. Students will complete four units in total; two of which are assignment-based. Unit 1: Human Life Span Development - External written exam completed in Year 12. Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care - External written exam completed in Year 12. Coursework: Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs - Internally assessed assignment. Unit 12: Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs - Internally assessed assignment. All Coursework is completed in Year 13.
