A Level Geography

Course summary

We are living in a time of rapid global change; A Level Geography focuses on the recent and current changes in the human and natural world. This is a 2-year course which aims to equip students with skills and knowledge related to current global issues. Students who study A level Geography will learn about the causes and effects of geographical issues as well as how we can manage and find solutions to them. The compulsory units are: - Tectonic Processes and Hazards, - The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity, - The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security, - Globalisation - Superpowers. Fieldwork and report-writing is a key feature of A Level Geography; students will also partake in a minimum of 4 days’ fieldwork and produce their own investigation report. These trips are likely to include London and Walton on the Naze as well as our local area. Geography is a facilitating subject and strongly complements the sciences and business/economics. Taking A Level Geography can lead students straight onto a Geography undergraduate degree at university or support studies in related subjects; it is a well-respected subject by universities. Geography students develop a range of geographical skills including map, graph, statistical, ICT-based and fieldwork skills. Their non-examined assessment provides them with an opportunity to carry out, and present, their own research in an area of geography they are most passionate about. Many of these skills are transferable and highly valued by employers, helping prepare students for their next steps in the workplace or further education.
