Course summary

Course Descriptor: Level 3 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – Digital Health Pathway The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) at UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park gives students the opportunity to explore an area of personal or professional interest in depth while developing essential research, project management, and presentation skills valued by universities and employers. Delivered as part of the UTC’s Digital Health specialism, the EPQ enables students to investigate how technology is transforming healthcare — from wearable sensors and artificial intelligence in diagnostics to data analytics and virtual rehabilitation. Through guided research and independent study, students identify a topic, design a project, manage its delivery, and present their findings to a non-specialist audience. Students can choose to complete a 5,000-word research essay or develop a practical artefact supported by a 1,000-word report. The taught element covers academic research, ethics, data handling, referencing, and communication skills in line with AQA’s specification. This qualification carries UCAS points and is highly regarded by universities and employers alike. It supports progression into higher education and apprenticeships in health, biomedical science, data science, engineering, or medical technology. Through partnerships with organisations across the Olympic Legacy Park and the wider health technology sector, students gain unique insight into real-world digital health challenges and opportunities — preparing them to become part of the future healthcare workforce.
