Course summary

If you choose to do an A Level in English, you will study the OCR English Literature course. As a student on this course, you will explore your voice as a storyteller and consider what qualities your own ‘voice’ might hold. You will create interesting ideas for new screen content and build your confidence as strong communicators. As part of the course, students study pre-1900 poetry and drama: The Duchess of Malfi by Jonathan Webster, selected poems by Christina Rosetti, and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Students also undertake a thematic study, in our case: The Immigrant Experience. The set texts for this are The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid and The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon. In addition to these texts we will investigate a wide range of literature exploring the immigrant experience, seeking to understand what writers have to say about the theme, how they say it, and why.
