Course summary

The Geography A-Level helps you to explore contemporary geographical issues which hit the news every day. Issues include the causes and consequences of globalisation on UK society, politics and economy; the impact of global superpowers on conflict and global governance; how to manage increasing risk to global populations from hazards including floods and earthquakes; and the environmental and political consequences of climate change. You will become an informed, critical thinker with an A-Level considered by the Russell group of top universities a facilitating subject for the range of technical, analytical and critical skills it teaches. Teaching will be through enquiry questions that encourage you to investigate issues, analyse the evidence and make up your own mind about solutions to local and global issues. You will learn in a wide variety of ways such as by using maps, GIS skills, data analysis, photos, videos and fieldwork. You will be encouraged to frame your own questions using higher level thinking skills and showing your grasp of complex issues through report and essay writing. Geography is a broad-based subject that fits well in a range of future university courses and careers. For example, it underpins careers in politics and economics; sociology; sustainability and environmental issues; managing the effects of hazards and climate change, and supports careers in business and law through an understanding of global economics.
