Extra-curricular

Universities and employers are increasingly looking for students to prove that they have academic interests and experiences that are additional to their specific qualifications. The enrichment programme is designed to enhance your studies as well as offer opportunities that could link directly to your career and higher education choices
A-Level Further Mathematics

Students often find the extra focus on the subject boosts their A-level Maths grade. The course is particularly useful for students reading Mathematics, Engineering, or the sciences at university. Further Mathematics broadens and deepens the knowledge and skills covered in A-level Mathematics. You can take this course as an AS or a full A-level. You must be an A-level Mathematics student and you need to have achieved Grade 7 or above at GCSE.

Music Tech – Grade 5

Offering a musical route through sixth form that is separate from A-level Music, this is a taught course that builds up music technology and production skills. You will study music production theory, develop your listening skills, and complete a piece of coursework based on digital audio work. A GCSE or BTEC in Music, plus grade 4 or above in a musical instrument, would be beneficial but isn’t essential. A-level Music students will take priority but everyone is welcome to apply.

Extended Project Qualification

The EPQ allows you to lead your own project: planning and researching a topic before producing a written report. You can take inspiration from something touched on in class or it can be unrelated to your studies. You will have a dedicated supervisor to discuss your progress and a weekly taught lesson to cover all the skills needed for a successful EPQ.

Maths GCSE Mentoring

If you’re confident and enthusiastic about Maths, you’ll make an ideal buddy for individuals or small groups of Higher paper students in Year 11. Your job would be to mentor them, boosting their confidence and positivity. You don’t need to be taking A-level Maths but you do need to have achieved Grade 7-9 at GCSE. You also need to be approachable, reliable, a good listener, and able to communicate effectively.

Online Safety Group

This is a student-led initiative focused on promoting digital well-being and online safety across the school community. Members of the group will learn about digital safeguarding issues, develop and deliver peer education campaigns, and work with staff to review and improve online safety practices within the school. This group empowers students to become Digital Leaders – responsible, informed, and proactive ambassadors of safe internet use.

Level 3 Sports Leaders Qualification

This is a nationally-recognised qualification where you will plan, organise, and lead small practical sessions with NSG students and primary pupils, as well as learning how to run events and competitions. It is great experience for anyone wanting to work within a sports-related field, management, or teaching. There are no exams, just continued assessment of the four units.

Core Mathematics

This is a one year, Level 3 course, designed for students who want to develop their mathematics beyond GCSE but aren't taking a Mathematics A-level.

Academic Mentoring

If you have a particular strength and interest in a subject, there may be opportunities for you to work as a teaching assistant in school. This could be helping a specific student in History, providing general support in Design and Technology, or checking on group activities in Drama.

Young Enterprise

This programme offers students the chance to run a real company. You elect a board of directors, raise money selling shares, then finance and market your chosen product or service. There is also the opportunity to participate in local, national, and – in some cases – international trade fairs. Taking part in Young Enterprise teaches you about aspects of business through first-hand experience. You will develop your skills of organisation, teamwork, delegation, and accounting.

Reading Champions

Assist with the English department's library lessons by doing one-to-one reading with students of all abilities. As well as getting to know all of the form group over the year, there will be a small number of less-resilient readers who you will work with each week. It’s all about being a positive reading model.
